This is the first disco picture I took. I found out that my grandmother’s youngest sister was still alive, in her nineties, and had just lost an eye to cancer. She lived in San Francisco, I live in Brooklyn. I wanted to meet her, and I wanted to bring her something. I settled on a disco ball as a gift for her. I caught a ride with a friend doing a road trip in order to see her. Along the way I began to take photographs of the disco ball in the landscape. After gifting hers, I have now carried my own disco ball in my camera bag on many trips. I used to send her prints to file in a little photo album dedicated to the disco project. I hope it brought her joy, as it does me.
